SO WE HAVE THE TRAILER!

And what a trailer it is!  It is enough to make me post on this blog for the first time since July 2016. I originally started this blog when the 2016 movie was going to come out and I thought it would be a fun time to go through my relationship of the Ghostbusters franchise and review the two previous films plus the greatest cartoon show of all time The Real Ghostbusters.  Since then I had very little reason to return since that movie's extremely negative reception made any potential sequels very unlikely. Fans have been told of a Ghostbusters 3 for over 30 years now so one did not seem possible.  I didn’t think anything of the first teaser trailer but this trailer inspired me to make some comments.

Two kids from the looks of it a teenager boy and a pre-teen girl are brought out to the country town of Summerville by their mother.  Both kids look like they could be related to Harold Ramis.  The family has lost everything but they have an old farmhouse that has been willed to them from their late grandfather who they never knew.  The house is full of old Ghostbuster stuff (including Ecto-1), but they don’t know what it is.  The younger kid brings a trap to his school and his teacher who must be an epic fanboy identifies it and explains to the girl who the Ghostbusters were.  It has been a long time before anyone had seen a ghost.  We also learn at this point that the kids don’t have a living father.

The town they are in gets a good deal of unnatural earthquakes.  We see the kids go through the jump suits and we see the Spengler name tag.  It sounds like at one point someone is going to get chased by one of Gozer’s Terror Dogs.  We also see them drive the Ecto-1.

Okay let us go over some things.  I think it is kind of obvious with the physical resemblance of the chosen actors to Harold Ramis and seeing the Spengler name tag on the jump suit it is clear that these kids are supposedly the grandchildren of Egon Spengler, my favorite Ghostbuster.  This raises more questions than it answers.  Although considering it is a trailer that is not necessarily a bad thing.  However let’s take a look at some of our questions.
  1.        The biggest mistake of the 2016 reboot was the fact that it was a reboot no sequel.  With no connection to the original Ghostbusters it killed a lot incentive for the traditional fan to support the movie.  Had the Holtzman character been the daughter of Egon Spengler, the movie might have received a great deal of more support.  This movie answers that right away by implying that both of the two kids are in fact the grandchildren of my favorite Ghostbuster.  Is it too much to ask for Janine Melnitz to be the grandmother?  Janine’s relationship with Louis Tully was one of the rare things that I didn’t like about Ghostbusters II.
    Supposed grandsons of Egon
  2.       Okay since they are the grandchildren I am a little concerned about the timeline. Ghostbusters II took place in 1989, so assume Janine and Egon got back together almost right away and had a kid by 1990.  That would make this kid 10 by the year 2000, 20 in 2010, and 30 in 2020.  The older kid looks like he’s about 16 years old!  So did Egon Junior get a girl knocked up when he was a freshman?  I’m assuming that Egon is the paternal grandfather and I’m basing that on the fact that these kids don’t seem to know anything about the Ghostbusters and part of the reason for that is their father is dead.  In the trailer the teachers asked “Didn’t your father tell you about this?”  The kid then gives us this odd look.  Their mother probably thought Egon was awkward and kept them away from him. The trailer only shows the family going to his farm house because they’re desperate.
  3.       Since we see all the Ghostbusters gear in the farmhouse, I have to ask where is the Containment Unit?   You know the most important thing?  The prison that all the ghosts are kept in.  Was it down in the well?  Was that what happened? The Containment Unit gets old and breaks open?
    Broken Containment Unit
  4.       I’m actually disappointed that look like Gozer is to be the villain again.  I would rather them to take on a new bad guy.
  5.            So about the Ecto-1, that is one old car.  I mean it was old when they got it in the first movie.  The vehicles possibly pushing 70.  Also that gunner seat, how much of the impact is the series The Real Ghostbusters going to have?  Because that was not in the movie, either one of them.
  6.            \Can this curious teacher of theirs turn out to be Oscar?  In my review of the second film I noted that I actually thought Oscar was Peter’s natural son not just his girlfriend’s kid.  One of these days I am going to do a post on that.
    Oscar?

  7.       There’s been some talk about how it doesn’t look like it’s going to be a comedy.  I think the jury still out on that, it is at the end of the day only a trailer.
