Summary: (Spoilers! After all it’s a summary. So stop reading if you don’t want a spoiler.) The movie begins with a tour guide getting the scare of his life.  The main action however starts with Erin Gilbert who is trying to gain tenure at Columbia University, so she is under a lot of pressure particularly from her Boss, Lord Tywin Lannister.  So she is not happy to hear that her old friend Abby Yates has published their book about ghosts, which she learns from a museum curator.
Erin

She goes to confront Abby and meets Jillian Holtzmann, who is Abby's new BFF.  They agree to pull the book temporally if she introduces them to the museum curator.  Erin agrees and they head out.  While they are at the museum they have their first ghost encounter, put the video on YouTube, and then they all lose their jobs.
Abby

They decide to come together and  do research independent of any college. The three women rent a floor on top of the Chinese Food Restaurant, and call themselves Department of the Metaphysical Examination.  They had been unable to afford the firehouse.  They hire an incompetent but really attractive receptionist named Kevin.  They are then contacted by Leslie Jones a subway worker about weird stuff that is happening in the subway after a mysterious figure named Rowan showed up.  They encounter a ghost and almost catch it but their tech needs improvement.   Leslie Jones after this joins their group bringing her New York City history knowledge and access to a car.   Their YouTube videos lead the media to label them “the Ghostbusters” a name they hate but nevertheless are forced to accept.
Holtzmann

Rowan North is a human who is trying to break the barrier with the spirit world and allow an army of spirits in, instead of the occasional few spirits that pass.  Rowan’s evil plan is being implemented while the Ghostbusters are building their tools.
Leslie

The Ghostbusters finally get a case where they go to a heavy metal concert to combat a large ghost.  The successfully capture the ghost in front of the concert audience but not before the ghost trashed the band and they trashed the theater in their attempt to catch it.
Kevin

As they travel back home with their captured ghost, a popular skeptic and debunker asks to see it.  After much arguing the Ghostbusters decide to let it out of the trap and show him.  Then the ghost flew out and killed the guy.  The local cops almost arrest them until two special agents take the Ghostbusters and bring them to the Mayor’s office.  They are surprised to find that the Mayor is a believer and he has been concerned about what’s going for some time.  He thanks the Ghostbusters for their information and then apologizes for having to smear them with the label of frauds in order to avoid panic.
Ghostbusters are on their first case.

The Ghostbusters then track down Rowan and have a confrontation with him.  The confrontation ends with Rowan’s apparently accidentally electrocuting himself.  They shut down his system and the Mayor’s assistant shows to thank them and let them know they are under arrest for being frauds.
Taking down the nasty ghost!

It turns out Rowan’s death wasn’t accidental but part of a plan to transform himself to a powerful ghost.  Erin figured it out while going through Rowan notes.  So she tries to warn the Mayor and is arrested again.
Rowan is not dead.

Rowan, now a ghost, possesses Abby then tries to kill Holtzmann.  Leslie manages to stop it and Rowan then leaves and possesses Kevin instead.  In Kevin’s body Rowan begins his evil plan.  He turns the machines on, freezes the cops, and allows the army of ghost to arrive.  The three Ghostbusters at the restaurant head out in their Ecto-1. When they encounter a road block they get out to clear it. While clearing it Slimer shows up and steals their car.  They don’t fire on it because there is a nuclear device on the top.  Then they are later pinned by a balloon version of the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, but Erin shows up to rescue them.  Erin had gotten out of jail and was looking for a taxi cab driver to bring her back to the action.
Ending the world

The Ghostbusters go to confront Rowan who abandons Kevin and takes the form of the ghost from their symbol.  They battle him for a while and realized that they need to seal the portal.  In order to seal the portal they need a nuclear device.  At that point Slimer along with a Mrs and some friends shows up in the Ecto-1.  The Ghostbusters get them to drive into the portal causing it to reverse and suck everything back in, including all-powerful Rowan.  Abby gets pulled in but Erin saves her.

Oh, Hell!
The city is back to normal but no one is sure what happened, the Ghostbusters don’t get credit but they do get the firehouse.  In the end they are building a Containment Unit and they get a message from someone called Zuul.
This isn't good!

My Take: (Lots of Spoilers in this section too!  Yup spoilers.)  When I first heard of this movie I had two main fears.  The first is they would take the Ghostbusters name and make a movie that didn’t even resemble the concept.  This fear was a set aside as soon as the first production pictures came in.  The second fear is it would be a complete remake of the first one retold line by line with the only difference being that it was women.  If you have seen the modern Karate Kid you know what I am talking about.

When the trailer first started I was excited, we were finally getting a third Ghostbuster movie.  Then the floor fell out when I found out it was a reboot and it killed my excitement for the project.  Nevertheless I vowed to enter the movie with an open mind, even though I felt weird after two movies and 140 episodes of a cartoon to be entering something called “Ghostbusters” knowing that Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, Egon Spengler, Winston Zeddemore, and Janine Melnitz weren’t going be there.

In my review for Ghostbusters II I stated that it was unfair that the movie was judged harshly because it wasn’t “as good” as the first one.  I said it deserved to be graded on its own merits as a movie.  Now you’ll notice that I graded this movie a five on a five point scale (the same for movie One and Two) that doesn’t mean they’re the same.  If I was grading on a hundred point scale I would give the first movie a ninety-nine and the second an eighty-seven, and current film an eighty-two.

Overall I found this to be a fast paced very entertaining movie.  If you go to see this movie you will have a good time.  The cast is great and they have good chemistry together.  I was very pleased to see it was its very own story and it wasn’t just a modern retelling of the original.
I loved that Slimer was there.  No Ghostbuster story is complete without him.

The biggest difference between the modern Ghostbusters and original is the relationship between the story and comedy.   The original Ghostbusters was a film that was a science fiction/horror story first and a comedy second.  It doesn't try to push the jokes on you they develop naturally with the characters.  In fact if you watch the movie as a child, as I did, you don’t even realize it’s a comedy until you watch as an adult and suddenly you get the jokes.  The funny part is you had four Ghostbusters with quirky personalities (plus Louis Tully) reacting to what is going on in a serious story. The new Ghostbusters is a comedy first and science fiction/horror second.  Each scene tries to squeeze out the maximum amount of laughs.  You might have to see multiple times to get all the jokes.

The comedy difference in the two films is best seen in the two meetings the Mayor’s office.  In the first Ghostbusters movie, the Ghostbusters have been summoned from jail to the see the Mayor.  When they arrived every major authority was discussing an event that they didn’t understand.  Among these men the Catholic Archbishop of New York, who could take no official position, said he thought it was a sign from God.  Everyone in that room, save the four Ghostbusters, was generally acting like people would act if the event were real.  In the new movie when they are brought in to the Mayor’s office a good deal of the meeting involves everyone in the office discussing the analogy of “Cat out of the bag.”

Like with my review of Ghostbusters II, I would like to point out things I didn’t like first so I can finish positive.  So the things I didn’t like:

  • The whole reboot thing.  I really wish they had made it into the squeal.  The old Ghostbusters have been gone for years and with the return of ghosts these women decide to recreate it.  Maybe have one of the old ones (Ray, perhaps) as a type of adviser.
  • The PKE meter looked dumb.
  • I didn’t like the new nontraditional Ghostbuster gadgets.  Their job is to catch ghosts not blow them up.  Since you can’t destroy ghosts if you rip them up then they will just reform, so you’re just adding trouble later. (Although it did turn out they didn’t have to worry about it.)

Things about the movie that I really enjoyed:

  • We have a Ghostbusters movie. Took long enough.
  •  Erin’s boss being Lord Tywin (I miss him.)
  • Jillian Holtzmann as a character.
  • All the Kevin scenes, funny as hell.
  • Leslie as New York historian; we might have some similar interests.
  • The chemistry between the four Ghostbusters.
  • The villain was very interesting.

                Now for my stray observations:

  •        Recognized the Silicon Valley alumnus giving the tour.  Interesting as I am currently training to be a tour guide.
  • Lord Tywin doesn’t like Princeton.
  • I like Pringles.
  •       For a person who was such a nasty human being Gertrude Aldridge’s ghost was rather tame.
    Bad ass human=Lame ass ghost.
  • If I was a subway worker and I saw someone jump on the tracks I wouldn’t be chasing after them, I would assume he was suicidal and call the cops.
Yeah, someone you would not see me standing on tracks of an active train system.
  •  $21,000 a month?  How much to buy?  No wonder their predecessors were always looking for cash.
  •  I thought it was interesting in this Ghostbusters movie, unlike the other two, these Ghostbusters never have a moment just being the Ghostbusters.  In first movie after their first job business booms and they earn fame as the Ghostbusters.  In the second one after the court scene the same thing happens.  In this one they catch a ghost and then a skeptic dies.  They get sent to the Mayor by the police and the major event starts.
First big ghost catch, no real reward.
  • Bill Murray got we he wanted out of a new Ghostbusters movie.
  • Where did Erin get her Ghostbuster gear and suit?  One moment she is trying to get a ride from a taxi driver wearing civilian clothes and the next she pops the balloon version of the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man in full regalia.
  • The white hair on the Erin and Abby in the end reminded me of what happened to Ray in the last episode of the second season.

Ignore the haters; if you really liked Ghostbusters as a kid you should enjoy this movie.

ONE OF THOSE KIND OF CARTOONS

Stay Tooned

Original Air date November 3, 1990

Writers: Len Janson and Chuck Menville

Director: Raymond Jafelice

Main Cast:
  • Dave Coulier as Peter Venkman
  • Frank Welker as Raymond Stantz
  • Maurice LaMarche as Egon Spengler
  • Buster Jones as Winston Zeddemore
  • Kath Soucie as Janine Melnitz
  • Frank Welker as Slimer
  • Rodger Bumpass as Louis Tully
(Rating 4 of 5)

Summary: The Ghostbusters are watching TV when Ray asks if it’s okay for him to change the channel the others tell him okay but sarcastically.  Ray doesn’t sense the sarcasm and changes the channel from the Lenny Jason Show (a parody of Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show) and eventually landed on the Sammy K. Ferrert show.  An animated show about a cartoon Ferret that degrades his fictional guests, Ray thinks it’s funny and so does Slimer.  The other three Ghostbusters leave in disgust.  When reception gets bad Ray sticks the antenna outside, only to have it get stuck by lighting.  The TV starts to grow large so Ray unplugs it.
Cruel to guests!

The next day, Janine on her lunch break plugs in the TV and Sammy K Ferret comes to life.  He plays a number of animated tricks on the Ghostbusters that Ray finds hilarious until the last one before he took off could have killed them.  They try to find Sammy in the city and that proves not to be hard because everything he comes across becomes animated.  During the chase Ray turns into a cartoon pig and Winston a cartoon dog.
Half of our team are cartoons.

The Ghostbusters try to lure Sammy into a trap by creating their own comedy show.  The trap works but he again proves immune to capture.  Egon figures out that he is just an ordinary ghost and if they anger him enough he will lose his cartoon shield and be vulnerable to attack.  Egon then turns into a cartoon bird.
Final stand!

When Sammy tries to attack the Lenny Jason Show the Ghostbusters put their plan into action irritating Sammy causing him to revel his true self  allowing the Ghostbusters to catch him.  Everything turns back to normal, some things sooner than others.

My Take: This episode strongly reminded me of the Season 2 episode “Who are you calling Two-Dimensional” where the Ghostbusters also have to deal with a cartoon character come to life.  This, like the previous episode, seemed to want to draw the line between the type of cartoon the Ghostbusters are compared to ones such as Lonny Tunes or Tom and Jerry.  Unfortunately, the message is lost on a season that continues to try and reincorporate elements of the dreaded Slimer subseries into the mainstream TV show.

                Now for my stray observations:

·         Like the creators of South Park I don’t feel there should be a limit to comedy.  In a comedy house prepare to be offended.  Yet I also expect it to be smart and cleaver but Sammy was just dumb.
·         Considering the way he was acting I didn’t feel sorry for Ray when he turned into a pig.
·         Why are they using an antenna?  Don’t they have satellite or cable?
·         Good way to get electrocuted guys.

A generally decent episode.

THE VAMPIRE OF GHOSTS

My Left Fang

Original Air date September 29, 1990

Writer: Sean Roche

Director: Raymond Jafelice

Main Cast:
  • Dave Coulier as Peter Venkman
  • Frank Welker as Raymond Stantz
  • Maurice LaMarche as Egon Spengler
  • Buster Jones as Winston Zeddemore
  • Kath Soucie as Janine Melnitz
  • Frank Welker as Slimer
  • Rodger Bumpass as Louis Tully
(Rating 5 of 5)

Summary: The Ghostbusters arrive in a small German town only to find that Slimer the Ghost is more popular than them.  This is the strangest case the Ghostbusters have ever had.  They were being asked by the townspeople not to catch the ghosts but find out what has been happening to their local ghosts.   The Ghostbusters are welcome by all, except their diver Boris.
Need to get a new driver.

Boris and his co-worker Frau Schweinkiller are to look after the Ghostbusters while they stay at the local castle, but also, it seems, to mislead them.  Then a vampire shows up and chases Slimer but the Ghostbusters were able to force the vampire to retreat.  Upon investigation they discover a community of the missing ghosts who have been stripped of all their slime and therefore powerless.
The German Ecto-1

The Ghostbusters battle the vampire again and this time he drains Slimer, and he was able to destroy Ray’s garlic and stakes.  Egon notes that vampires fear sunlight but not other forms of light, and concludes that ultraviolet is their weakness.  The rig their packs to blast ultraviolet light and destroy the vampire.   They are able to save the slime the vampire stole and use it to restore Slimer and the local ghosts.
Broken Ghosts

My Take: The Ghostbusters have dealt with vampires before, first a town of them and then a retired one.  This one is a great concept: a vampire of ghosts.  I knew the Count Von Blukenporken was doomed the moment he touched Slimer however.

                Now for my stray observations:

  •         I would have never got in the car with Boris.
  •        Why didn’t they use this as an opportunity to clean out their Containment Unit?
  •        After those traps in the castle I would have found a different place to sleep.
  •        Was it Slimer that made the “No” sign change itself?
  •        Actually Ray figured out how to alter the packs for artificial sun light the first time they took down a vampire.  Sorry continuity points.

A really good episode one that I remember from childhood.

THE GHOSTBUSTERS ARE BACK IN SPACE

Spacebusters

Original Air date September 22, 1990

Writers: Len Janson and Chuck Menville

Director: Raymond Jafelice

Main Cast:
  • Dave Coulier as Peter Venkman
  • Frank Welker as Raymond Stantz
  • Maurice LaMarche as Egon Spengler
  • Buster Jones as Winston Zeddemore
  • Kath Soucie as Janine Melnitz
  • Frank Welker as Slimer
  • Rodger Bumpass as Louis Tully
(Rating 4 of 5)

Summary: Peter and Winston are on the job but Winston keeps messing it up to check his beeper, until Peter gets so frustrated he destroys it.  The next day Winston is accepted to NASA as a civilian adviser.  The Ghostbusters are thrilled for their long time member who gets to return to space.
Happy to see Winston not dead!

The three Ghostbusters, Slimer, and Janine all watch the space mission from TV only to see one of the astronauts get absorbed by a ghost.  The screen goes blank so the remaining Ghostbusters head to NASA to help Winston.  When their shuttle gets them to the space station they find a bunch of empty space suits but Winston is okay.  The alien has been absorbing the crew and Winston was only saved by the PKE meter.
The ghost from space!

The Ghostbusters hunt for the ghost and Slimer gets a pet mouse. The Ghostbusters are limited to where they can blast because of the hull.  This limitation allows the ghost to absorb Ray and Egon.  Peter and Winston are informed by Slimer that the creature wants to lower the station down so it will be destroyed in the atmosphere allowing the ghost will escape.  Peter and Winston finally get the ghost in a place where they can blast it.  They force it to release all the people, while Slimer short circuits the system stopping the decline.  The Ghostbusters then to trap the ghost.
Slimer hanging out!

My Take: Well the Ghostbusters second space adventure wasn’t really as good as the first.  The space crew didn’t show us anything, what happened the Star Trek parody people?

Now for my stray observations:

·         I thought it was odd their previous space adventure wasn’t even mentioned.  Winston and Ray were awfully excited for people who had done this before.
·         I honestly thought Slimer was going to eat the mouse before it became his pet.
·         The Ghostbusters can’t be destructive, this time it costs them too.
·         It was actually the moose that saved the day.
·         Yeah it was good Jack Nicholson impersonation.

In space no one can hear you call.

THE GHOSTBUSTERS IN RUSSIA

Russian About

Original Air date October 6, 1990

Writer: J. Michael Straczynski

Director: Raymond Jafelice

Main Cast:
  • Dave Coulier as Peter Venkman
  • Frank Welker as Raymond Stantz
  • Maurice LaMarche as Egon Spengler
  • Buster Jones as Winston Zeddemore
  • Kath Soucie as Janine Melnitz
  • Frank Welker as Slimer
  • Rodger Bumpass as Louis Tully
(Rating 5 of 5)

Summary:  The Ghostbusters go to Russia to do a presentation on Ghostbusting.  While being escorted by their handler, Katerina, a scientist named Vladimir and his assistant declare themselves the Ghostbusters' rivals.  After the Ghostbusters finish their presentation, Vladimir accuses them of stealing the Book That Must Not be Named!  The book is a dangerous and can be used to summon the one of the gods known as "The Old Ones."  Katerina mentioned that Vladimir often talked of the old ones, they then realized that Valdimir had accused them to cover his own crime for the purpose of raising and Old One.
Egon giving their presentation in the Soviet Union.

To stop him and clear their names Katerina helps the Ghostbusters sneak out and locate Vladimir and his followers.  When they finally find them Valdimir and his followers have already begun the spell.   The Ghostbusters chase them off, but the old god is rising.  Fortunately Egon already invented a device to deal with this very thing.  Unfortunately they left it in New York.   To stop the old god from enslaving the world Egon has Slimer fly all the way back to New York to get it.  The combined the power of their packs is used to power Egon's the destructive device so much that it can take down the old one.
Vladimir trying to rise the Old One.

With the old one defeated they return to the service to find Vladimir and friends arrested.
Trying to raise an old god.

My Take: Another fun episode.  I am really interested in Russian history, and like Peter Venkman I have found most Russian women I have met to be very attractive.  This episode reminded me of the episode   “The Collect Call of Cathulhu.” Only this old god didn’t make it as far nor was he identified.

                Now for my stray observations:

  •       When this episode aired the Soviet Union had less than sixteen months before it collapsed.
  •       The Book That Must Not be Named, if I remember correctly has to do with TV censors not allowing "Satanic" ideas.
  •        Elvis Presley? Vladimir isn’t too smart.
  •        Vladimir makes an accusation.  Considering what he was trying to say earlier about Elvis and the Titanic maybe they shouldn’t take him too seriously.
  •        I like the HP Lovecraft reference.
  •        I am glad Egon coached Slimer on the use of his powers so he could save the day.  It’s funny how often, even in this episode, Slimer forgets his abilities.
  •        It is just like a black hole but not “just” like, right?

You have to learn to get around when you are the only Ghostbusters in the world.

JANINE GETS HER WISH!

Janine, You've Changed

Original Air date September 8, 1990

Writer: J. Michael Straczynski

Director: Raymond Jafelice

Main Cast:
  • Dave Coulier as Peter Venkman
  • Frank Welker as Raymond Stantz
  • Maurice LaMarche as Egon Spengler
  • Buster Jones as Winston Zeddemore
  • Kath Soucie as Janine Melnitz
  • Frank Welker as Slimer
  • Rodger Bumpass as Louis Tully
(Rating 5 of 5)

Summary: The story begins with the Ghostbusters working a routine job except its gets nasty towards the end.  When they return home exhausted they don’t say much to Janine but Peter pulls a prank on her. The prank causes Janine to drop her scrape book.  In the book are photos from the past and Slimer notices that Janine looks very different from her earlier pictures.  So he takes the scrape book to the Ghostbusters and it lights a fire under their butts.  Egon creates a holographic display that uncovers the fact that Janine has changed in hair, height, weight, and voice.  They need to find out why because it maybe supernatural.
Something is not right!

The Ghostbusters then go and spy on Janine but they are so bad it that she grows frustrated with them being weird and leaves.  Slimer follows her home and finds out she has a fairy godmother who is granting her wishes.   The fairy godmother realized that Slimer was spying on them and sent her demon dogs after him.  Slimer flies back to the firehouse and the Ghostbusters capture the dogs.
Not really good at spying!

After reading Slimer’s report Egon determines that Janine is being haunted by a Makoveris Lotsabucks, a ghost that preys on your insecurities.  They try to find Janine but she has run away.  Egon locates her and Janine is forced to choice between them.  Egon confesses that he and all the Ghostbusters love her just the way she is.  This lets Janine see the truth of her benefactor and she turns back to their side allowing the Ghostbusters to catch the creature.
Cheaper than plastic surgery.

Later Egon and Janine decided to resume dating.

My Take: Okay, big episode, when I first read the episode’s premise I thought it looked dumb.  However I really enjoyed the episode and rated a five simply for restoring my favorite relationship in the series.  Janine, an attractive young woman who easily could find a boyfriend, falls in love with a man who doesn’t know how to process normal emotions.  The tragedy of this is Egon actually loves Janine very much but he doesn’t know how to express it in way that he could be comfortable with.  For Janine she doesn’t understand this so she assumes that because her clear affections aren’t returned that there is something wrong with her.   In this episode we see the length she will go to help change that.  A good moral lesson could be made for those who seek body altering surgeries to try to get someone’s approval.

When Egon approaches Janine at the end I found myself frustrated with him.  Instead of just telling her what he feels.  He keeps taking two steps back for every two steps forward.  He tells Janine, “I love you, we all love you” and “It doesn’t matter what you look like.” Instead of what he needs to be saying, which is “Janine I love, I always have” and “Janine I always thought that you were beautiful.”   When he lays down his proton pack it has the effect he intends and Janine turns on the demon.

Now for my stray observations:

·         Poor Ghostbusters, cockroaches are gross.
·         I am really hoping that the Makoveris Lotsabucks starts off slowly with subconscious before appearing as a full-fledged fairy godmother.   I hate to think that every episode since Season 3 Janine has been in active contact with this thing.
·         When the voice of Peter and Janine changed I found them both dramatic but Janine more so, I am glad they just didn’t focus voice change part but things like height and eye color as well.  Of course if the magic is undone shouldn't she revert to her season 1 self and Laura Summer reassume the role?
·         Peter earned a cookie.
·         Slimer reports!
·         Apparently we never needed a “Peter You’ve Changed” episode. Well somebody did.

And who says the great episodes only came in the first three seasons.

GHOSTBUSTERS DEALING WITH ANOTHER GHOST ON A TRAIN

Slimer Streak

Original Air date December 16, 1989

Writers: Pamela Hickey and Dennys McCoy

Director: Charles Grosvenor

Main Cast:
  • Dave Coulier as Peter Venkman
  • Frank Welker as Raymond Stantz
  • Maurice LaMarche as Egon Spengler
  • Buster Jones as Winston Zeddemore
  • Kath Soucie as Janine Melnitz
  • Frank Welker as Slimer
  • Rodger Bumpass as Louis Tully
(Rating 5 of 5)

Summary: Winston is playing with his train set and trying to get Slimer to keep it clean.  Then the call came in, and the guys head out.  When they arrive at the Madison Square Garden they find that it is gone and the old Penn Station is standing.  As they go in they find a train.  They enter through the caboose and find a ghost who identifies himself as The Player.  The Player wants to challenge the Ghostbusters, who try to use their packs to no effect.  The Player says that he has games planned for them and if they fail they would be trapped in the ghost world for eternity.
This wasn't here before.

The first challenge was a game of tag against a creature born to play it.  They fooled that creature by playing tag amongst themselves until the creature asked to join and was tagged.  The second was a giant pinball machine Winston was able to win this one with an assist from Slimer.  The third was a slot machine.  They all tried and failed time was running out.  Then Peter guessed from a phrase The Player used that Slimer was the answer.  This was correct.
The Player's challenge

They Player swore he would return but he did leave and everything returned to normal.

Heading to the Ghostworld before Slimer saved the day!

My Take:  As a season final this wasn’t bad.  The Player was arguably the most powerful villain they have ever faced.  His abilities reminded me of Star Trek’s Q or Superman’s Mr. Mxyzptlk as a seemingly all-powerful being who just wants to play with the heroes.

Now for my stray observations:
·         Now I thought it was established that Peter was the train enthusiast not Winston.
·         Some ghosts their packs aren’t effective but that was the first time that happened.
·         I noticed Slimer didn’t try to eat Winston’s train.
·         This character deserves a longer story arc.

This episode was a great introduction to a new villain and a great way to end the season.
